Common questions about repatriation

Answers to the questions families and funeral directors ask us most often. If yours is not here, call us at any time.

What is repatriation?

Repatriation is the transfer of a person who has died away from home, either back to the UK or to their homeland abroad, so that burial or cremation can take place there.

Where do you operate?

We are based near Glasgow in the West of Scotland, with convenient access to transport links for mainland UK, Ireland and mainland Europe. We offer full UK and Ireland road repatriation including all islands, UK repatriation by air, and international repatriation from Scotland where possible. Through our associates in London, Holland, Czech Republic, Poland, France and the USA we can arrange repatriation to or from any country in the world.

How much does repatriation cost?

The cost depends on the circumstances of each transfer. We will provide a full no obligation estimate and, once all the information has been provided, a firm quotation before any commitment by you. Call us or use the Transfer Request form to start.

How long does it take?

Timescales depend on where the person is, where they are going and the documents required. We have built a reputation for fast response and are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so call us and we will explain what to expect in your situation.

What documents are needed?

We deal with local authorities to make sure the correct documents are issued to allow a person to be transferred from Scotland, England, Wales or Northern Ireland. We liaise with foreign consulates so that the right procedures are followed for entry into the receiving country and for burial or cremation to proceed. When bringing someone home to the UK, we arrange for the correct documents to be issued for the authorities here and advise on procedures once they arrive.

Can you register the death?

In Scotland we can register the death if members of the family are not available.

Do we need a special coffin?

For international repatriation we have a selection of suitable coffins. For repatriation within the UK and Ireland, your chosen funeral director can supply a coffin suitable for your local custom, and we will transfer your relative or friend using suitable regulated transfer equipment.

What if repatriation is not possible?

If it is not possible to repatriate your loved one to their homeland, we can carry out a cremation in Scotland and return the cremated remains. This can be an attended service or an unattended direct cremation. The cremated remains can then be returned to the homeland or delivered to a relative or friend in this country.

How are cremated remains transported?

Within the UK and Ireland, cremated remains are transported personally by our trained and experienced staff in our own vehicles and delivered to your home address or another address of your choosing at an agreed time. If you ask us to deliver to someone other than yourself, we must receive the instruction from you in writing. For international repatriation of cremated remains we can also provide a personal attended transport service.

Can families contact you directly?

We normally make all arrangements with funeral directors, but we can arrange directly with the family if preferred.

How do I request a transfer?
